Kydex OWB with Tek-Lok review by Eric C. of TX:
I heard of Josh Kolbeson from a friend and looked him up online. I was impressed
by the quality of the designs he offered and I saw that he offered custom work
as well. In addition, Josh lives in my hometown of Austin Texas, so I had to go
local. I got to talking to Josh on Facebook and kept seeing these great looking
holsters rolling out of his shop everyday and I had to ask him to make me one. I
was attending Magpul’s Dynamic Carbine 2 course and needed a kydex OWB holster
that would fit a gun belt I use on callouts. Josh said he was willing to try and
immediately went to work. I only advised Josh that I wanted zero cant and a mid
to low ride height to clear my body armor, other than that, I asked him to
surprise me. Knowing that Josh is a shooter and a holster maker, I was
interested in what he would come up with. Within a week, I received two
holsters at my door just in time for class.
Both of the OWB versions are
identical other than the addition of a sweat guard on one. Josh used a single
piece of .08 kydex to press and hand form the holsters. He utilized a Tek-Lok
belt clip that is ride height adjustable and is attached directly to the body of
the holster for a slimmer profile. The holsters have adjustable tension as well
as heavy duty hardware. Upon inspection, I saw immediately that Josh’s attention
to detail is fantastic. I couldn’t find a rough edge anywhere and all the smooth
edges were evenly sanded. If it didn’t contribute to a balance of speed and
retention, it wasn’t on these holsters.
I adjusted the ride height to where
I liked it and attached it to my belt rig. I holstered my Glock G-17 and used
the included wrench to adjust the tension to where I liked it. Once that was
done I began practicing my draw stroke in full kit. The holster exceeded my
expectations on all counts including the fact that there was NO lateral movement
on my belt. Josh came up with a minimal design that fully protects and holds my
weapon securely during movement and physical activity. My pistol slides easily
into the holster and snaps firmly into place, it stays there until it’s needed
and the draw is fast. My pistol is out of the way of my armor and my transitions
from primary to secondary are smooth and easy. The ability to adjust drop and
tension gives me a level of versatility that’s really appreciated. I had
several people ask about it during my rifle course and I was only too ready to
give credit where it was due, Josh Kolbeson.
I either have the first two he made of this style and they aren’t leaving my side, ever. My life depends on my gear and,
in a way; it now depends on Kolbeson Leatherworks. I can’t say much more than
that.
Thanks Josh.
DPS review by Paul P. of NV:
Hello,
We
just finished teaching a private Two day AK & Handgun class wanted to do a review of Josh's DPS (Dual Purpose Solution) holster. I received his holster on
Friday, upon opening the package the first thing you notice is the
quality Josh puts in to his work.
We
used the holster both days of the class, I had Two other guys teaching
with me. We passed the holster around like a bottle of Jack on a summer
afternoon, all of us including the students tried the holster out. We
were on the ground, in/out of vehicles, playing in some mud, etc.
Everyone liked the quality of the holster, the fit of the pistol to the
holster and the metal clips that Josh uses.
It
was a little weird for us to go back to using leather, we have been
using kydex for a long time. We used the holster in IWB/OWB fashion
seeing it is a combo holster, it felt great in IWB/OWB. We really liked
the fact that Josh uses metal clips instead of kydex/injected molded
ones, we tried the holster a few times drawing the pistol without a belt
and the holster stayed where it needed to. I would not use any belt
type of holster without a belt but it was comforting to know it worked.
Definitely
a Two thumbs up on this holster. Keep up the great work and we look
forward to using your new products.
